Choosing the Right Snow Guards for Slate Roofs

Copper ST18 Snow Guard on Slate Roof
Rocky Mountain Snow Guards offers several copper snow guards for slate roofs. Our SnowTrapper (ST) line includes the ST18 for new natural slate roofs and the ST16R for existing roofs. The new Yeti line includes the Yeti 18 and the Yeti 16R.

The Yeti and ST snow guards share the same classic half-round style but are different sizes.  The ST is the original patented half-round style and is sized for lighter snow loads and/or lower sloped slate roofs.  Whereas, our Yeti line is larger and fabricated of heavier material for use in more demanding situations with higher snow load and/or steeper sloped roofs.

Both the Yet and the ST snow guards include a thin strap that can be nailed without pre-punched holes.  The thin strap also does not lift the slate above like some "bar type" snow guards.  The half-round style is relatively wide at the base and this pad design all but guarantees that the snow guard won't tip sideways once installed.  Also, since the fulcrum is farther back than the pad is tall, the half-round snow guard will not tip over under loads.  The ST18 snow guard has been successfully installed on thousands of slate roofs throughout the United States and Canada since its introduction in 1997.

The big difference between the Yeti and the ST snow guard is the size of the pad.  ST's are small and unobtrusive on a slate roof.  The Yeti's are larger and more effective (fewer snow guards are needed to hold the snow) while maintaining the classic half-round profile.
